You know that bin of dowel rods at your local home improvement store? Look carefully and you'll probably notice a little sticker with tiny print that says "MADISON - MADE IN USA"
Madison Mill 1-3/8" x 48" dowel rod
It turns out that Madison Mill has been quietly going about their business for more than 66 years and has become the premier suppier of precision wood products for moldings, craft suppies, outdoor goods, housewares and more.
Deep in the heart of Tennessee sits the Madison Mill factory where they've refined their processes ove the years to improve efficiency and consistency of their products. Using sustainable practices they have been able to provide low-cost products of the highest quality since they started in 1959. They somehow manage to use 99% of the wood they process - right down to he sawdust!
Their products don't stop at dowel rods - they also produce an array of other items including: pins, plugs, buttons, spindles / finials / pegs, craft sticks, clothes and boot drying racks, garden and survey stake and tool handles. And if that wasn't enough, they can also handle custom millwork orders if you have special needs on your new construction or renovation projects.

Personally, I was buiding a closet-organizer system for one of our closets and had the need for a 4' x 1-3/8" dowel rod (pictured above). I have to say I was pleasantly surpised to see the 'Made in USA' sticker and had to know more about this company! The dowel itself was perfectly round and straight with a very smooth finish - didn't require any sanding before install. And pretty tough to beat the price which was around $8 USD. All I had to do was cut it to length and install - piece of cake!
